Floodwater is a dynamic force that can exert significant pressure on any construction in its path. Our Heavy Duty flood barrier is designed to withstand these forces with a high safety margin. It is capable of handling strong currents, high water pressure, and additional loads such as waves and floating debris colliding with the barrier at high speeds. These capabilities were rigorously tested at the US Army Corps of Engineers Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory in Vicksburg, MS, in accordance with the FM ANSI 2510-2020 standard.

“Oh, we are so happy with the barrier. We know we’re supposed to get a permanent wall in the future, but the Geodesign Barrier has been a lifesaver. And will be, until the new wall is finished.”
- Irene Buxton, Beales Corner resident and member of Bewdley Flood Group
"Temporary flood barriers are now an established and a vital ‘tool in the box’, alongside well-rehearsed deployment procedures, emergency plans and comprehensive risk assessments. As part of the Environment Agency’s wider flood risk management strategy, they are helping to enhance community resilience, saving enormous costs from flood damage and importantly, helping to reduce the dreadful impacts and stress that floods exert on families and businesses alike."

Heavy Duty is a flexible flood barrier system, equipped with specially designed elements to adapt to various environments – in both rural and urban areas. With adjustable, horizontal connection rods and triangular-shaped corner elements, the barrier can be constructed in all directions and levels – similar to a Meccano set. Additionally, the Heavy Duty system can be seamlessly integrated with other Geodesign Barrier models, and its height can be extended as required. This unique flexibility is the result of years of experience in designing and using flood barriers globally, in real flooding situations.

The Geodesign Heavy Duty flood barrier is built to withstand even the most challenging conditions. With its robust construction, this system provides reliable flood protection. Despite its strength, it's surprisingly quick and easy to deploy. In fact, the assembly process has often been likened to that of a Meccano set, with parts easily put together, piece by piece. And you don't need any tools or machines! With the Heavy Duty flood barrier you can prepare for any potential flooding without difficulty – and without involving lots of people!
Begin by determining your barrier line. Then, space each frame 1.2 meters apart, to shape the barrier. Next, unfold the support beam(s) of each metal support. Use the snap lock located at the rear end of the bottom support beam to secure it to an upright position. Repeat this process for each frame until your barrier line is complete.
Connect the metal supports by attaching the connection rods. Insert the connection rods into the keyhole slots on the front beam of the support, allowing them to drop down, into place. The connection rod design and the front beam slot ensure a locked connection without the need for additional clips and pins.
Install the aluminium panels by hanging them onto the barrier, hooking them securely onto the protruding sections of the connection rods, through the designated panel cutouts. The panels are engineered with a self-locking mechanism that securely interlocks with the connection rods, requiring no additional small parts and ensuring stability against wind forces. Start by applying the top layer of panels to enable you to comfortably 'step in' with one leg during installation, allowing for a smoother, more accessible deployment process.
To deploy the membrane, roll it out along the barrier and secure it using panel clips at the top of the barrier. Then, attach a chain to the outer edge of the membrane on the ground and fasten it securely with cable ties.
As the flood water rises and applies pressure onto the barrier, it will automatically anchor the system, together with the ground friction helped by punched collars under the bottom beam. This provides stability and protection against flooding.
The versatile Heavy Duty system is specifically designed for demanding environments and heavy-duty applications, incorporating a range of advanced features to ensure optimal performance. Comprising flat-packed A-frame metal supports, connection rods, aluminium panels, and a plastic membrane, this reliable and durable system has been continuously improved and optimised over the past 25 years to meet the evolving needs of our clients. Thanks to our collaborative development process, the Heavy Duty system is now a quick and easy-to-handle solution that can withstand extreme conditions. It is constructed from special steel sourced from Swedish SSAB and aluminium. The barrier holds both BSI-Kitemark and FM-Approval certifications, attesting to its high quality and performance.
Punched metal collars located underneath the bottom beam, effectively take a grip on the underlying surface and generate sufficient friction to ensure self-anchorage against the ground.
Innovative locking mechanism enables fast and easy mounting of connection rods and aluminium sheets without the need for tools or loose parts. This streamlined process saves time and effort, while ensuring a secure and reliable connection between components. It also saves on storage for small parts like locks and pins.
Our chequer plate aluminium sheets are designed for durability and ease of use, with a corrosion-resistant finish that ensures longevity and strength. Laser-cut and beveled for precision, these sheets combine functionality and user-friendliness.
Our panel clip provides a user-friendly solution for fixing the membrane securely in place against the barrier. Featuring a simple and intuitive design, the clip can be easily applied by pressing it down over the membrane and the aluminium sheet.
Our metal supports have a collapsible and stackable flat-pack design for user-friendliness and minimal storage volume. In their upright and locked position, the support beams transfer water pressure to the bottom beam, where metal collars increase anchoring force and stability through friction, ensuring a secure and reliable structure.
At the bottom of the outer support beam you find a spring-loaded snap-lock that quickly and easily secures the beam in an upright position. As there is no need for tools, pins or screws, this quick process saves time and effort, while ensuring a secure and reliable structure before the water comes onto the barrier.
To ensure durability and longevity, we use high-strength steel for all components exposed to high loads. To further protect against corrosion, these components are hot-dip galvanised, providing an excellent level of resistance to environmental wear and tear.
Our laminate-coated high-density polyethylene (HDPE) material is optimally sized and quality laminated to minimise leakage and maximise self-anchoring forces. With its durable laminate coating, this material provides a reliable and long-lasting solution for containing liquids and ensuring a secure barrier.
Our barrier system features a 12 mm x 5 m galvanised steel chain, complete with carabiners. The chain is used to weigh down the membrane before the water comes onto the barrier. This ensures that the membrane remains securely in place both before and during the flooding, even in windy conditions.
The Heavy Duty system is not only designed to perform under demanding conditions, but it is also packed with convenience and storage efficiency in mind. The system comes in powder-coated metal crates that are specially designed to optimise volume for transport and storage. Removable short sides make it easy to load and unload the crates, and the stackable design allows for an efficient use of storage space.
For outdoor storage, the metal crates are covered with a PVC cover to protect the components from sun and rain. In order to move the flood barrier system, a manual forklift can be used to manoeuvre the crates into position.
A complete flood barrier set of 33 sections (40 meters) is packed into three metal crates, making it easy to transport and store the entire system in a compact and efficient manner. With this design, the Heavy Duty system offers not only reliable and effective flood protection, but also a streamlined and user-friendly storage solution.
The Combi crate is designed to contain connection rods, panel clips, plastic membrane, and chains.
