"We are very happy with the levee. The only reason there isn’t floodwater throughout the city is the levee stopping the water. We are very very relieved.”

What do you want to know about Geodesign Barriers?

Are Flood Barriers Expensive?

Evaluating the cost of flood barriers involves considering their life cost rather than just the initial expense. This cost must be weighed against the potential damage and expenses of even a single flooding event. Flooding not only causes immense human suffering and mental health impacts, but also leads to significant economic costs. These include the displacement of residents, often for extended periods, the drying and repair of flooded properties, disposal of damaged goods, and heightened costs for crucial infrastructure like electric substations, hospitals, and airports.

By preventing these costs even once, a flood barrier can prove its worth many times over. Thus, when assessing a flood barrier’s price, this broader cost-benefit comparison is essential.

How Do Geodesign Flood Barriers Work?

Geodesign Barriers are temporary, mobile flood barriers that can be rapidly deployed without tools whenever and wherever needed. Their core structure consists of interconnected A-frames made of extra strong, galvanized steel with aluminum panels, enabling them to withstand extremely tough conditions. The angled frames utilize the downward water pressure to self-anchor the barrier, and the design also relies on ground friction, typically eliminating the need for additional fixings. Once the Geodesign plastic membrane is in place, any leakage behind the barrier is pumped back, and it's essential to block any drains, manholes, or cavities to prevent surcharging.

How Do Temporary Flood Barriers Work?

Temporary flood barriers are engineered to create an effective defense against floodwaters. For optimal effectiveness, they must be deployed following the manufacturers' guidelines. These barriers generally consist of a durable metal frame covered by an impermeable plastic membrane, blocking the water flow. The weight of the water itself helps to anchor the barrier, with additional stability provided by friction against the ground.

In addition to the barrier, pumps are employed to manage water levels, and any ground inlets or drains are sealed to prevent leakage. The plastic membrane is extended towards the water to slow underground water movement. While the permeability of the ground can affect dryness behind the barrier, these systems are designed to withstand significant water pressure and control water flow, thereby mitigating flood impact. Temporary flood barriers are a strategic blend of robust construction and effective water management, aimed at controlling and minimizing flood damage.
